I went to E3 in 2000, 2002, and now 2003, and it is an amazing spectacle. This event made me feel like I was part of an important social phenomenon. There is a strong feeling of community that comes from seeing tens of thousands of people who have the same passion for creating and playing video games. The technology and creativity on display is exciting and inspiring. When I first went to E3, I thought it was one of the most exciting events I ever attended. With each passing year E3 had become more dazzling and thrilling for me.

The exhibits are really beautiful. Maybe E3 is somewhat like being in a waking dream. The convention halls are filled with bright colors, sound effects, music, and the chatter of well-dressed, trendy people from countries around the world. It is a celebration of fantasy, imagination, and fun. There is a type of purity to the video game industry, despite the fact that video games often depict sexuality and violence, because the games are created mostly to entertain people. ( Some video games and movies can be used to encourage people to buy things, or believe in ideas, or do things (like exercise or join an army). But most video games are designed only to entertain people. ) I see something of a Utopia in video games.

The following images are in chronological order, showing my somewhat random tour of E3. Sorry, some images are not focused. I wanted to take pictures quickly to avoid disrupting people. After the set of E3 images I have a few images near the offices of Sennari (a former employer) just to indulge my own feelings of nostalgia.

I should have taken a picture of the McDonald's in the Home Depot, which is only a few hundred feet away from Sennari. I bought food there perhaps two hundred times during the development of NCAA Football 2001 (PSX) and Power Puff Girls (GameCube). ( Some of my coworkers thought my tolerance for the food at McDonald's was amusing. But I only started driving at the age of 29 (1999), and I was a somewhat nervous about driving in Los Angeles, so I preferred to walk to places to eat lunch. The convenience of getting food by a short walk was also a factor in my choice to eat at that McDonald's. )
