CREATING, DEPLOYING, DOWNLOADING
IMAGES

PREPARE A 120 x 160 GIF IMAGE

Steps for creating static wallpaper: [1] Open any image with Microsoft Paint or Adobe Photoshop; [2] Scale or crop image to 120 pixels wide and 160 pixels high; (e.g., 120 x 160 pixel image) [3] Save the file in GIF format (e.g., "hello.gif") (With Adobe Photoshop you do: File --> Export --> Gif89a") It must be a GIF file for the Motorola T720 phone to decode it. Making it 120x160 means that the image will fit the desktop perfectly.

NOTE: I successfully downloaded and displayed a *.GIF image that was 118x120 pixels, which is smaller than the screen size of 120x160. I believe the remaining part of the screen is filled with the a color selected from the border of the image...perhaps the upper left pixel?

The Motorola T720 phone has 4096 colors which I assume is equivalent to 12-bit RGB (4-4-4). So, avoid images with small color gradients that span large distances! Also, the GIF format itself is limited to 256 *unique* colors, so you need to keep that in mind, too. Actually, I suggest just going for it, and checking the appearance on the phone.

PUT THE IMAGE ON YOUR WWW SITE

I copied the image "si.gif" to the root directory of my WWW site.

DOWNLOAD THE IMAGE TO YOUR PHONE "OVER THE AIR" (OTA)

Simply go to the WebAccess menu, and select "Go To URL", and type in the URL to your image. In my case I typed in the following URL:

http://www.colinfahey.com/si.gif

If the download is successful you will be given the option of storing. When you decide to store, you are given the option of simply storing in your set of images or setting as wallpaper (which also stores in your set of images).
[1] WebAccess menu: Select the "Go To URL" option. [2] Enter URL: Type in full URL to the *.gif file. [3] Connecting: Wait for connection and download to complete.
[4] Preview of image: Press "STORE" button. [5] Store Option: Select "Set as Wallpaper" (or do "Store Only") (NOTE: Set as wallpaper also stores image in your collection.) [6] Changed: Wallpaper [file name]: Wait for message to vanish. Exit all menus back to desktop.
[7] New wallpaper!

ANIMATED GIF SCREEN SAVERS

FIGURE: sun.gif, an animated GIF image. Simply animate a 120x160 GIF with your favorite GIF animation software, put the GIF on your web site, and download the GIF to your phone.

NOTE: I am pretty sure it is okay to have an animating GIF for a T720 "screen saver" that is smaller than the screen size of 120x160. I believe the remaining part of the screen is filled with the a color selected from the border of the image...perhaps the upper left pixel?

Go to the WebAccess menu, and select "Go To URL", and type in the URL to your image. In my case I typed in the following URL:

http://www.colinfahey.com/sun.gif

When you download the image to your phone, you will be presented with the option of "Store Only", "Set as Wallpaper", "Set as Screen Saver", etc. You can do "Store Only", and later select the animated GIF as a screen saver. Or, you can "Set as Screen Saver" (which implicitly stores the file, too). Sadly, the T720 does not animate "wallpaper". It would be so cool to open the phone and see the "wallpaper" animate! Oh, well. You will only see an animated GIF actually animate when the phone enters "screen saver" mode -- which might take thirty seconds or more. You can set the screen saver activation delay in one of the menus.
